LGBT Coming Out Stories

What does it mean to be a gay, lesbian, bisexual, or transgender today? In 1996, Open Lives, Safe Schools stated that “gay and lesbian students are perhaps the most underserved students in the entire education system.” (Walling, 1996, p. 242) Is this still true today? What about media influence?

Coming out is a difficult process, and it affects everyone differently. By creating a digital coming out story, you may be able to better express and construct your own story for a wider audience (if you so choose!) or yourself. Please comment here and tell your story.

From Jennifer on December 13, 2009:

I had always had “crushes” on other female students and teachers, but also had “crushes” on boys. I had posters in my room of Scott Baio, Willie Aames, Shawn Cassidy, Parker Stevenson, John Travolta, and so on. I had kind of an awakening at age 16, a light bulb came on in my head after waking up from a dream that I was a lesbian. Then at age 16, I had my first girlfriend and there was no doubt. I have never really had to come out to anyone. I had a teacher who I had a crush on tell my father when I was 16. When I was 21, graduating from college and living with my first partner, I was walking to church with my mother who brought up marriage. I said that I wasn’t sure that I was going to get married. She asked me if I was a lesbian and I said yes. My mother believed it was important to love the sinner but hate the sin, so I’m sure she prayed for me. That’s my story short and sweet. Most everyone else has just figured it out.

It was in college. I was, well thought I was straight at the time, until I met my roomate Amber. She was gay and just couldnt understand how i liked men….i would go with her to her lesbian functions and did my beset to support her and my other gay friends. Another friend of mine came out to me and invited me to Baltimore Pride fest. I told her that a friend of mine in college (Amber) had really filled me in on the lifestyle and that i had no problem with her being gay. I went to pride fest, a chic came on to me….a few days later, she became my girlfriend…lol….Thats where it started and snowballed from there..>THANKS AMBER!!
